I have been in Nashville for a little over three years and can you believe I have never been to the Grand Ole Opry. My husband and I have made it a point to go on a date at least once a month; if not twice. So when the Grand Ole Opry asked if I wanted to partner with them, and offered to host a date night for us to see a show; I jumped at the opportunity! I quickly called my husband because he is a country music fan, and it just so happened that his favorite country western band was playing; Rascal Flatts!
I’m still in shock that we’ve been in Nashville for over 3 years and still hadn’t been to the Grand Ole Opry. The Grand Ole Opry is a staple in Nashville; like Nashville Hot Chicken and the Tennessee Titans. In order to be considered an official Nashvillian you must have attended a Titans game, indulged in some hot chicken and of course experienced a show at the Grand Ole Opry. After looking at the schedule my husband and I decided to see the show headlined by Rascal Flatts because he is a huge fan. Myself, on the other hand had never heard Rascal Flatts. My husband is a music enthusiast so if he said Rascal Flatts is a must see; I knew I would be in for a treat! Boy, he was not lying! Our lineup was pretty amazing:
- Larry Gatlin & The Gatlin Brothers
- Jeannie Seely
- Del McCoury Band
- Charles Esten
- Thompson Square
- Rascal Flatts
I was not expecting the show to be so packed, but I guess everyone in Nashville came out to see Rascal Flatts because they were completely sold out. There wasn’t an empty seat in the house.
Before we found our way to our seats our first stop was to grab a bite to eat. I had nachos with jalapeno peppers and my husband had pizza. What better way to enjoy our date night than eating nachos, pizza, and listening to Rascal Flatts?
The Opry show is divided into several sections that have different performers for each section so it’s kind of like several shows all in one. I was not a big country music fan prior to our date night, but I was so surprised by the sounds of pop, gospel, blues, and a little bit of country. In my mind, I had all of these preconceived notions about what country music was and I completely caught off guard. I told my husband several times during the show how much I was enjoying myself. Rascal Flatts brought the house down, and the gospel song they sang had me feeling like I was in a southern baptist church! It was absolutely amazing!
What I didn’t know was that the Grand Ole Opry has been broadcasting weekly radio shows since 1925! In case you are ever visiting in town, they have live shows every Friday and Saturday, year round; and each show is streamed live at 650 AM WSM; via Opry.com, on Sirius XM Satellite Radio, and also via the free Opry App so you can still listen in; even if you aren’t in Tennessee.
Country music is no different than gospel or blues. It tells a story and draws you in by its authenticity and love for America. If you have been hesitant about going to the Grand Ole Opry like was, don’t be; because at the end of the day music is suppose to move you, make you think, and touch you in ways you didn’t know was possible.
Let me tell you, my husband was right when he said Rascal Flatts would change my life, and if we were going to go to a show this was the show we needed to see. It was by far one of the best shows I’ve been to in a long time. The lead singer can sang; not sing, but sang!!!
During intermission, we got to go backstage and get a tour and learn about the history of the Grand Ole Opry. We got to see all of the dressing rooms which have different themes. We hung out on the side stage VIP area with our guide, and I was in awe of how the show was run like a fine oiled machine. This was one of the best dates we had in a long time and I look forward to attending another show for our next date night.
I wasn’t a big fan of country music and I am not really sure why; but since 2017 is about getting out of my comfort zone and trying new things, I jumped at the chance to work with The Grand Ole Opry. I’ll definitely suggest that if you have not visited The Grand Ole Opry make sure you add them to your bucket list.
Thank you for a great date night!
